Language Tests or Language requirements
Do I need to pass and ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST to study in Russia? Is the question you must be having in your mind. Let us make it clear and precise for you. If your first language is not English, you’ll need to show excellent language proficiency to apply to a Russian university.

English Language Tests for International Students: Every university in Russia accepts IELTS Academic as well as TOEFL iBT or PBT, and almost all also accept the Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic), and Duolingo (in a few universities only).
- IELTS: IELTS is a commonly accepted English test all over the world. The most common requirement to study in Russia in an English-language Masters or Bachelor’s degree programme. an IELTS score of 6.0 (with no section below 5.5), an IELTS score of 6.5 (with no section below 6.0), and/or an IELTS score of 7.0 (with no section below 6.0). When applying to universities in Russia, keep in mind that the minimum IELTS score required may vary depending on the institution and program.
- TOEFL: TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is accepted by most Russia universities and colleges. A TOEFL PBT overall score of 480–523, a TOEFL iBT an overall score of 80–90, and/or a TOEFL cBT score of 318–287 in the written test with an overall score of 90, When applying to universities in Russia, it’s important to research which English proficiency tests are accepted by your desired institutions and programs. The minimum required TOEFL score varies depending on the institution, with a typical range of 60 to 70.
- DUOLINGO: Going a bit virtual, Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test gaining popularity among Russian universities. The Duolingo test also measures the same four language skills but in an adaptive format. Universities accepting Duolingo scores are the University of Eastern Russia and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The minimum accepted score varies, but most universities require at least 75. But as compared to the other two, Duolingo offers an affordable and accessible option for students who need to prove their English proficiency.
- PTE: PTE is accepted by 60% of Russian schools and universities. It is usually available in over 50 countries. However, it is currently available in 10 countries, including India and Nepal. Results are available immediately. The minimum PTE score required in Russia is 55 and it may go up to the highest depending on the course level.
Entrance Exams and Introductory Unified State Examination (EGE): When enrolling at a Russian university on the usual terms, the applicants submit the results of the Unified State Examination (EGE) or pass admission tests. The EGE is the exam taken by all high school graduates in Russia. Its results are accepted for enrolment at Russian universities. International applicants can also take the EGE for enrolment to a university. All necessary information can be found on the exam’s official website. In addition, universities conduct admissions tests in the form of a written or oral examination on the discipline corresponding to the chosen subject. Enrolment decisions are made based on their results. Some universities conduct separate admissions exams for international students.
Academic Competitions: Every year dozens of academic competitions at various levels are held in Russia and abroad. Winners and other participants who place highly in some of these competitions can expect enrolment in Russian universities without examinations or under preferential conditions. Foreigners can participate in international and Russian competitions as well as in those specially held for them by various groups of universities. How to take part in Academic Competitions: Tests Many Russian universities conduct tests individually or jointly and select talented international applicants based on the results. Representatives of universities visit various countries or send tests assignments to their colleagues abroad. The applicants with the best test results can expect preferential terms when enrolling at Russian universities.
VISA types and Its Understandings
A student visa is a type of visa required by foreign nationals to study and stay in Russia for the duration of their studies. A student who is not a citizen of Russia but wants to study in Russia requires a Russia Student Visa to fulfil this purpose. Any foreign student who enrols on a course lasting three months or more in Russia will require a student visa.
There are different types of visas meant for people intending to pursue educational activities in Russia. The type of visa that you require to travel or migrate to Russia depends on your purpose of visit and the number of days you intend to remain there. The length of your study program will determine which type of student visa you should apply for.
Type of Visa for Russia
- Russia E–visa (Online visa for Russia): A Russia e-Visa is an electronic travel authorization intended to simplify and streamline the visa application process and encourage international tourism. Eligible travellers can apply for a Russia e-Visa from the comfort of their home, entirely online. The application form can be completed in minutes and the support documentation required to obtain a e-Visa for Russia is reduced to a minimum. All applicants will need in order to complete the online e-Visa application for Russia is their passport, a recent photo, and relevant supporting documents such as proof of health insurance. Documents can be submitted at a later stage of the application.
- Transit Visa: A Russia transit visa is a travel document that allows foreign citizens to enter the country on the way to an onward destination. It can be issued for up to 10 days, although the period of validity granted will be determined by Russian authorities, taking into account the date of departure to the onward destination.
- Private Visa: The private visa to Russia is available for eligible foreign citizens wishing to visit friends or relatives in the country, and may only be issued if the travellers receive an invitation from a permanent resident of Russia over the age of 18. To apply for a Russian private visa, the inviting party must first supply the required documents to the Main Investigative Department of the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation:
- Work Permit Visa: The Russia work visa is available to eligible foreign citizens who have already secured a job with an employer in the Russian Federation. Most Russian work visas are issued for a period of 1 year, although qualified specialists may receive an initial work visa with a 3-year validity. This type of Russia travel document allows the holder to enter and exit the country an unlimited number of times during the period of validity. it is also possible for the applicant to renew the work visa before the expiry date without leaving Russia. To obtain a Russian visa for work purposes, the employer of the foreign citizen must first apply for a work invitation on their behalf from the Russian State Employment service. The applicant must then present the required documents at a Russian Embassy or Consulate
Student Visa: The Russia student visa allows a foreign citizen to live in the country and study at a Russian university, providing they have first received an invitation from an educational institution in Russia. The Russia study visa has a total validity of 90 days, although a longer period of stay can be later be granted if the applicant obtains an invitation from the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation. To obtain the Russian student visa, it is necessary to present the required documentation at a Russian Embassy or Consulate. Russian student visas are issued to those that wish to enter the Russian Federation for study purposes. Russia issues study visas based on invitations by the Ministry of Interior. These visas can be: Single entry, Double entry or Multiple-entry. A Russia Student Visa is valid for 90 days. Later on, the Ministry of Interior will extend its validity for the duration of the study contract, up to a year.

1. Apply for a school in Russia
- Before you apply for a student visa you will need to apply for admission into the Undergraduate or Graduate program. Before starting your study abroad in Russia, you will have to be admitted and get a study visa. As a potential future student in Russia, the first thing you need to do is find a university there that suits your study program. As soon as you have a school in mind then you should apply at the university.
- If you are not accepted, you won’t receive a student visa. Proof of enrolment is obligatory. Every program, depending on the level of education and location has different entry requirements. Since different rules apply in educational institutions in different regions in Russia, contact the program coordinators of the universities of your choice directly to get to know more about the admission requirements.
- The original documents must be signed and stamped by the official authorities. After you submit your application, the university will evaluate it and let you know whether you need to pass an admission or aptitude test or not.
2. Receive Offer Letter & Pay Initial Fees
- Now that you have been admitted and you receive a document called Letter of Acceptance from the institution’s international student office. You will be instructed to pay some fees to confirm your admission to the institution. Pay the fees from your bank account for safer transactions and then get Final Offer Letter from the college.

3. Submit Visa Application & Book your Biometric at VAC
- You have passed the admission test or met the admission’s criteria for higher education studies at a Russian university. Next step is to apply for your student visa/residence permit as soon as possible. Contact your closest Russian Embassy or Consulate for additional queries. You must submit the student visa application to the Russian Agency.
- Complete the Russia student visa online application form. Find the online visa application at kdmid.ru. This is the official website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Answer the mandatory questions marked with a “*”.
- Once you submit your application through the e-service then you have to go to the embassy to prove your identity and submit your fingerprints. Bring all the documents you submitted in the online service with you. Additionally, you must pay the application fee at the embassy/consulate. 4. Attend Visa Interview

5. VISA Approve or Decline

6. Arrive in Russia
- You have already gained your admission and your student visa. If your application is successful, you will get a visa to Russia and travel there. Yet, upon arrival in Russia, you need to complete two more procedures. Get the immigration card. At the Russian port of entry, you will receive an immigration card. - A completed and signed visa application form.
- Previous educational certificates.
