- Education in Hungary: The education system in Hungary has represented academic excellence for more than 600 years. Universities accepting Duolingo scores are the University of Eastern Hungary and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The minimum accepted score varies, but most universities require at least 75 out of 160. 1. Apply for a school in Hungary
Before you apply for a student visa you will need to apply for admission into the Undergraduate or Graduate program. Before starting your study abroad in Hungary, you will have to be admitted and get a study visa. As a potential future student in Hungary, the first thing you need to do is find a university there that suits your study program. As soon as you have a school in mind then you should apply at the university. If you are not accepted, you won’t receive a student visa. Proof of enrolment is obligatory.
2. Receive Offer Letter & Pay Initial Fees
Now that you have been admitted and you receive a document called Letter of Acceptance from the institution’s international student office. You will be instructed to pay some fees to confirm your admission to the institution. Pay the fees from your bank account for safer transactions and then get Final Offer Letter from the college.
Once you receive your acceptance letter then you can apply for a student visa. In this case, you actually need a residence permit on the basis of studying. The application process for the permit starts by creating a user account. Once you create an account select the application form for a ‘residence permit on the grounds of a study program’ in the e-service.
Fill in the online application with the correct information and submit your application. You must attach scanned copies of the required documents (see above) to your application. If by any chance you can’t fill in an online application then you can visit a local embassy or consulate and fill in a paper application in person.
3. Submit Visa Application & Book your Biometric at VAC
You must submit the student visa application to the Hungarian Agency Once you submit your application through the e-service then you have to go to the embassy to prove your identity and submit your fingerprints. Bring all the documents you submitted in the online service with you. Additionally, you must pay the application fee at the embassy/consulate. If you apply in person then similarly you will be asked to submit your fingerprints and pay the fee. You might also be asked to sit for an interview. The interview is just to get a feel of your personality and your reasons why you want to study in Hungary.
4. Attend Visa Interview
Now is the time to wait for reply from High Commission and based on your application, biometric and details you will be asked to submit documents (if required). Attend the interview.The embassy will ask you to show up for an interview to ask questions related to your application process and education. Then, you must wait to receive an answer whether your application has been accepted or rejected.
5. VISA Approve or Decline
- Once you submit your application you must patiently wait for an answer. The Hungarian Immigration Office evaluates students’ applications as a top priority so the processing time will be done as soon as possible.
- The time will vary especially if you are missing anything from your application and the embassy contacts you to submit the missing documents, but, the usual time it takes to review an application is usually sometime between 1 to 3 months. As soon as your application has been approved the Hungarian Immigration Office will send your residence card to the embassy where you can then pick it up and leave for Hungary.
Applying for Student Visa?

Eligibility Criteria for Hungarian Student Visa: To be eligible for a visa to study in Hungary you must fulfil the following conditions. These are some of the documents you need to submit during the application for a residence permit:
- Proof of English language proficiency.
- Valid passport. Enclose a valid and original passport with two blank pages for stamping. Your passport must be issued within the last 10 years.

- Passport-size photographs. Attach two recently taken photos within the last six months to your application. Glue one photo to the application and include the other in the documents. Photos should conform to the Schengen requirements.
- Medical insurance. The university in Hungary should state in the invitation letter whether the medical insurance is covered by them. If not, you must include a document of travel insurance proving you have an amount of €30.000 to cover your medical expenses. The medical insurance must be valid for the whole Schengen Area.
- Letter of acceptance from the university. The letter should contain information on the beginning date of classes and payment information (if applicable).
- Proof of accommodation. If the Hungarian University provides accommodation, it must be noted in the invitation letter. If you have to provide an accommodation place for yourself, you must submit a rental agreement with the owner of the building and a property document issued within the last month.
- Proof of paid fee. Students who are recipients of the “Stipendium Hungaricum” state scholarship are exempt from this requirement.
- Financial status. Everyone must submit a translated bank reference and bank statement of the last six months.
- Students should also submit a letter from the university (in English or translated into English), including the address and contacts of the educational institution, signature, and stamp of the person in charge.
- If there is a lack of income, you should present a sponsorship letter from your parents stating they will cover all costs.
- Copy of marriage certificate with notarized translation into English. (if applicable)

Scholarships in Hungary: Stipendium Hungaricum: Hungary is becoming an increasingly popular host country for international students. One of the reasons is the Stipendium Hungaricum, Latin for “Hungarian Scholarship”. The scholarship is very generous: It includes tuition fees, medical insurance, a housing allowance and a monthly stipend. Every year, the Stipendium Hungaricum is awarded to around 5,000 students from over 70 partner countries. Whether you are eligible for the subject you want to study depends on the cooperation programmes that are in place. Usually, you need to submit your application with all documents by mid-January to receive the scholarship for your studies commencing the same year.
Scholarships: In terms of scholarships, all state scholarships are run through the Hungarian Scholarship Board (HSB). In 2007, 35-40% of these scholarships were given to students in need, and 60% were merit-based. This seems to differ from other European countries that tend to place more favour on students in need of financial help. Scholarships from the HSB are given to students from every study cycle, even post-doctoral. If a student is given any other scholarship from the Hungarian government, they cannot accept any money from the HSB. HSB scholarships do not help with travel expenses and do not entirely cover the cost of dorms.
Students’ loans: Hungarian Student Loan Centre loans are available for every student regardless of merit and are to help cover the costs of tuition and living. Five years after the Centre was founded, just over 50% of enrolled students had borrowed money. The students applying for student loans must be either Hungarian, a refugee, or have a permanent residence or immigration card. The student must also be under 35 years old. When a student receives a loan, they are not required to tell the government how they plan on using it or follow a universal, set time line for repayment. As a country, Hungary is aware that students may have difficulty paying back a loan, and so offer an income-contingent repayment. That means the amount a student needs to pay back and when it needs to be repaid depends upon how much the student is making at their job. Students can also prepay as much as they choose without penalty.

You have nine months to find a job and then apply for a work permit and residence permit for the purpose of employment.
Students studying in higher institutions in Hungary will get a residence permit once they obtain a student visa. After having a residence permit for a period, they can continue to apply for a national residence permit or an interim permanent residence permit. A permanent registration card is issued to EEA citizens after five years of uninterrupted residence in Hungary.
Generally, international students studying for an English-taught degree in Hungary have to pay tuition fees. However, these are lower than in other European destinations, and there are several options for obtaining a partial or total scholarship.
It can be worrying to have your visa application rejected, but there’s no need to give up hope straight away. When you receive your refusal letter, the consulate or embassy should explain why your application was rejected. The usual reasons for rejection include things like: (1) Incomplete application, (2) Evidence of funds not provided or satisfactory, (3) Providing false travel documents, (4) Lack of appropriate travel medical insurance.
If you made a simple error on your application or forgot to provide certain documents, you can reapply and correct your mistake. It’s worth noting you’ll need to pay your application fee again, and won’t receive a refund in the event of a rejection. If you don’t agree with the reason for your rejection, you can appeal the decision. You should appeal in writing to the Hungarian embassy or consulate you applied through. There is usually an appeals fee to pay, which is non-refundable, even if your appeal is successful.
- There are 2 main ways to do this: (1) Start a new study program (2) Apply for a work permit or PGWP before your study permit ends (you can continue to work while you’re waiting for your application results)
- You can own your business or be self-employed while you are studying in Hungary . However, even if you’re self-employed, you still have to keep track of your off-campus working hours. You have to demonstrate that you’re following the terms of your study permit.
- Any time you spend collecting a commission for performing a service, selling a product or receiving payment for a service is counted as ‘work time’ and cannot exceed 20 hours.
International students can only work 20 hours per week while on a study permit. However, during your winter or summer breaks, you can work full time. You must have been a full-time student before and after your employment to stay within the conditions of your study visa. That means you can’t work before you start your first school semester.
During academic semesters, you can have more than one job. For example, you can be a tutor, and work at a café or be a delivery driver, all at the same time, but it must all be part-time. That is, the accumulative time you work cannot exceed 20 hours a week.
